Super Seniors Reflect

"We can learn to see each other and see ourselves in each other and recognize that human beings are more alike than we are unalike." - Maya Angelou

The past two days we had the opportunity to first visit Project Morry and then volunteer with Families First at a non-profit organization, Champlain Area Trails. A few reflective quotes from the Super Seniors sum up the experience below.

"When we first arrived we were greeted warmly and given a tour by our wonderful ambassadors Edens, Kelly, and Jordan." - Daniel

"It was really fun to hang out with the PG3s and make friends with the younger kids at lineup and dinner." - Vicki

"Every camper and counselor was ecstatic to be there, and before long, we were too." - Garrett

"At Morry's Camp I made so many friends; Deshawn, Taizan, Edens, Jordan, Rashelle, Paulina, Jasmine, Gino, Matthew, Channing, Kelly, Roxy, Cody, Nastara, and many other kids." - Reena

"You could see it in their smiles that they were proud of their camp also extremely grateful to be there." - Michael
“It was so great how Project Morry sets up the kids to make goals and reach them. When the PG 3's told us about the education and the 'majors' that they do there, I was surprised by how good of a program they have there. I didn't know how big of an impact Project Morry has on the kids and the communities that they help. I had a great time and I'm really happy I got to have that experience.” - Caroline

“It opened my eyes to the different ways people could help each other have more opportunities in their lives.” - Julia

“It was a great experience and I hope to help with Morry’s Camp in the future.” - Katie

After swimming and running Morry's laps for 7 years, it was exciting to get to see what I contributed to every summer. Now my understanding of Morry's camp is a special camp that gives kids who try their best, and are from underprivileged communities to attend a sleep away summer camp. Morry's camp is an extraordinary place with even more extraordinary people.” - Chad

“Morry’s Camp was an unforgettable experience.” - Laura

“It showed me how kids that came from disadvantaged neighborhoods can come together in camp and create a family. I was especially glad that the Morry's camp kids welcomed us into their family too. Southwoods and Morry's camp were much more similar than I expected.”- Ryan

“Working with Families First was a great way to give back to the near community I've spent so many summers by. I met hard working kids who have been building and developing trails for years, which was very inspiring. My favorite part of the work was walking back and seeing all of the trails we cleared and created.” - Jamie

“Families First made me feel like I really helped a worthy cause. Clearing those hiking trails was actually pretty fun.” - Julia

I was not expecting for it to be as welcoming and beautiful as it actually was. After learning more about Morry's Camp, I began to further appreciate the participants of Project Morry. Every child had a strong drive to succeed throughout their life which allowed us to appreciate them more. Leaving Morry's Camp stunned me, as I was able to see a different life to those similar to mine. I was able to appreciate what I have been blessed with and honor the children who will surely succeed in life.Working with the teenagers of Families First was a completely different yet similarly as shocking experience. The teenagers at Families First also led lives that I could not believe were real yet they were able to live them everyday. One of the girls whom I should not name touched upon her life at home when speaking to me. She spoke of a life without a supportive family. She opened my eyes in a way that I would never know without meeting her. Both Morry's Camp and Families First can be described as eye-opening and life-changing experiences. They taught me to not take my life for granted and that strength can be found in even the most dire situations and lifestyles.
